I think you your problem is the drain line is too small. The way it should be set up is a 2" drain with a pee trap into the main drain. If there is no pee trap, you have another potential problem to deal with. If the drain is going into a large pipe, you need to go to that point install a sanitary tee with a 2" outlet side, then a pee trap, and then the drain pipe. There's just too much volume for that small pipe to swallow all at once. The pee trap prevents sewer gas from coming out of the sewer.
