Noise in Pipes

I get a clunk sound when the hot or cold water is turned on and off. If I turn the main Hot water supply off and turn the cold water on and of at the fauscet there is no problem. If I Turn the Main Cold water Supply off and leave the Main Hot water Supply and turn the Hot water on and off at the faucet there is no problem. But, If I have both the Main Hot and Main Cold Supply on I get the clunking sound. I have checked the piping to make sure everything is securely fastened and can not find a problem. I recently change out the Shower valve to a Price Pfeister valve. Could there be a problem with the pressure compensator inside the valve that is causeing this problem?
