Basement Odor

I'm in the process of remodeling a bathroom. Since the location of the toilet and sink were changed from the original, I had to run new drain, waste and vent lines. The drain line was tied into a cast iron drain line which leads to a sewer system. Both the toilet and sink drains are currently plugged up with rags to prevent gas from entering into the house. Over the past few days, I have had a fairly intense odor building up in the basement. It seems to be coming from the area where all the new piping (PVC) ties into the main drain line. I checked the new runs to see if they were secure or if perhaps one of the seals was broken when the tile installer accidentally moved the toilet stack but all seem sound. Also, when I removed the rag from the toilet stack, the odor was present but there was also some moist heat flowing upward. I should mention that we've had several days of 90+ heat. Any suggestions on how to tackle this problem would be greatly appreciated.
