Toilet flange in a 1973 house

I am remodeling my bathroom, and after cracking the old toilet (don't ask! - My frustration and temper!), I went and bought another one. After bolting down the new bowl, and trying to put the tank on, I realized the tank wouldn't be able to go on.....the bolt holes on the bowl are an inch in towards the wall. I then began to re-assess my situation, and have now thought of looking at the toilet floor flange. I am living in a 1973 house; any ideas what the flange would be made of? And how are these flanges 'attached' to the pipe in the ground and to the concrete floor slab? Thanks for any ideas!
