Well Water Main Cut-Off

I have a well-water system and I need to replace a hot-water washing machine hook-up. There is no water cut-off valve before the water heater and the main water cut-off. Do I cut-off the cold-water valve from the water heater and drain the water heater in order to make the repair? Do I cut-off the main water supply? Do I do both? If I need to cut-off the main water supply do I do this at the pump? Help! Please send me an e-mail. thanks!
