Plugging up a floor drain in the basement

I have a floor drain in my basement which brings in water from the storm water sewer. There is a cast iron strainer embedded into the concrete in the floor. I do not use this drain and am looking for the best way to plug it up permanently. The strainer is so strongly lodged into the floor that there is no way that I can take it off and install a FloodGuard valve on the drain pipe. I am thinking of dropping mason compound (which contains sand) through the openings in the strainer to fill the hole and then adding water to let it solidify and prevent any water from flowing through it. Any suggestion for the best way to do this is welcome.
