I think you're on the right track with solder, but I wonder if you used flux? Without flux, 5 lbs of solder won't make a joint. Try cleaning the joint with emery cloth or sand paper first, then heat the joint a little. When the joint is fairly hot, put some flux on it, then apply more heat and try the new solder again.
