You are correct about the drain, it must be centered. This means you must break concrete. The 2" drain goes down, into a pee trap, and then to the sewer line. You can not just elbow over to the existing drain. Perhaps you could if you put the shower stall on a raised floor, but that's asking for trouble. Can you do it yourself? Yes, if you're up to it. Rent a concrete breaker and break out the concrete between the old drain and the shower stall drain. You have to get to the old trap and either use it or replace it. After that it's pretty much downhill. Rough the new pipe in, build the alcove for the shower stall, set the stall, and finalize the drain.
