You can use any size you want and then reduce at the bathtub connection. I always use a 2" trap and then insert a 2 x 1 1/2" bushing in it to make the tub connection. : Books always indicate a 1 1/2" trap for a tub, but 2" for a shower. What I don't get is that a 1 1/2" horizontal drain is too small for the number of fixture units for a bathtub. So why use a 1 1/2" trap ? : Is there any harm in using a larger 2" trap and horizontal drain pipe for the tub, too ? Are bathtub drain sizes made for a 1 1/2" trap so a 2" trap will not work ?
