I'm not sure if follow all of your question, but you have to have a slope to the drain line of 1" per 4'. You have to be able to make connections in the excavation, so the opening has to be deep enough and wide enough to do those things. When you're breaking concrete, it is much harder to go 2 feet wide as 1 foot, so give yourself room to work. I don't know what you mean by the new going under the steel or sit on top. If you have a steel slab, you've got a real problem. Maybe you can clarify your question and give a bit more information.
