Water Heater

When I turn on my washing machine it sounds as if there are rocks being rattled in my water heater. Any ideas as to what the problem is? I don't hear the sound when I turn on the water from another faucet. Also, after I flush my toilet and it finishes running it sounds as if there is a metal door slamming! What could be the cause of this? Thanks, Maria
