In response to Re: Venting Pipe on Bathtub and shower on second floor
: I am Purchasing a new home, which a Home inspector look at. He indicate that the shower and bathtub venting is not installed correctly. He said that the venting pipes run along the floor under the tub area about 6 feet, then up the wall to the roof. He said that this is wrong. I am trying to find out what is wrong with this, and what is the correct way to vent this. Or where would i find the spec's on the correct way to have this vented....Thanks Russ

The tub drain line which is 1 1/2 inches should reach vent within 3 feet 6 inches by code. The shower drain which a 2 inch line is supposed to reach the vent within 5 feet by code. I think the reason is to prevent siphoning, which is where the water in the drain line is pulled out of the trap allowing sewer gas to flow into the room. My tub is vented at 5 feet cause I had no choice due to placement however I tested the line and the water stays in the trap so I'm told it's ok, even though not to code....
