The water is being pumped from the pit, but it could be coming from several places. And it can be pumped to a drain or out onto the yard, or again any of several places. The purpose is to get rid of water in the basement area before it overflows and floods your basement.

: Thanks to hj and edj for your information. I guess I should have asked: What is a sump pumps purpose? Where is water being pumped from? Where could the "water leak" possibly be coming from: Inside or outside. I'm a woman of 73 yrs old, and I've never had to deal with sump pumps before. Thanks.

: : If the underground water table is high then the pump will operate constantly, you may want to talk to your neighbors and see if they have the same thing happening.Your city or town waterworks may also be able to tell you if you have a high water table,or at least point you in the direction of someone who can.If you don't have a high water table then there may be a leak underground.Leaks can be fixed water tables can't.
