Hot Water Heater element replacement

Hello, I am going to replace the heating element on my Reliance 501 water heater. I went to shut off the water to the tank so that I could drain it, and I cannot find the shut off! I have located the Cold In, Hot Out, all all the other major parts of the tanks "anatomy". This seems ridiculous, but is it possible that there isn't a shut off? I look forward to any advice that you can offer as I REALLY don't want to call a plumber for such a simple job. Thanks! Johanna
