No, it is mostly a hangover from the days of the gravity/convection systems where the drain valve was the best one by the time the water line got back to the water heater.
: Most schematics for hot water return lines with a circulating pump have the return line hook up to the water heater drain outlet. Why connect there instead of to the cold water inlet? Is that done to avoid warmish water going into the cold water pipes?
