I used to utilize the "plier/screwdriver" method but came out on the losing end too many times. If the trap grid is weak is will snap. This will result in about an hour of extra work to hacksaw (using a special plumbing hacksaw) and remove the broken trap. Buying the tool ($11.95) is a much better alternative and has always saved me time and stress.
