old toilet replacement

I am trying to replace an old toilet about 25 years or more old. I have taken the old toilet off of the drain pipe. The problem i am having is the flange that holds the toilet down to the floor. It is unlike the new ones you buy at the store today. It seems to be attached by some type of mettallic glue and the flange looks like it is about 2 or three inches going around down the main drain pipe. I can see the flange from the basement. It is around the toilet drain and like i said, goes down about 2 or 3 inches. I am not sure what the best thing to do to remove it would be. If i eventually do get it removed, will a new flange work around that same pipe? This house i bought was built about 51 years ago. I can only assume that the toilet drain is the same age. thanks for any help and advice you can give.
