Running water Lines Through Joists

I just read an article that suggested any holes drilled through floor joists weaken them severly. I have a 115 year old home with true dimensional 2x8'S. I have reinforced the previous hack jobs which included a job where someone chopped out both ends of a triple header, leaving the remaining wood sitting on the ceiling. Unfortunately, I had no practical choice but to drill holes for the water lines running through the middle of the 2x8's. The holes range to a max of 1'1/4 inch. What's the problem if any? I went through 3 spans of joists to connect to the shower.
