If you have a pressure reducing valve on the system, it could be failing and the noise is the pressure leaking through it instead of being regulated when no water is being used. : When the water is left running for a while and then shut off, there is a loud trumpet-like noise emerging from the pipes throughout my house. What could be causing this? There was no such noise before.
