Why is this necessarily true? Wouldn't it depend on the level of the sewer line in relation to the level of the basement, assuming a blockage did not force sewage from the upstairs drains into the lower drains (which could happen just as easily in a 2-story structure)? Anyway, I'd be more interested in thoughts on what to look out for when choosing where to place vents. : If you connect basement toilets or showers into an underground drain system, there is no way to avoid the risk of a backup.
