In response to Re: Tub drains into kitchen via the light in the ceiling
: There has been what I believe to be a hair clog in my tub drain for some time. I poured a drain cleaner recommended for hair down the drain. The tub would still drain very slow. It has been a couple of weeks now, and yesterday the kitchen began leaking profusely. I wonder if the drain cleaner could have eaten through the pipes. This message is preliminary to any work I am going to do. I just wanted a bit of advice... Should I even attempt to fix this problem by going into the floor, through the ceiling, or should I just get a professional? There is an access panel in an adjoining room, but from the location of the water coming through the ceiling, I would say that the leak is coming from directly underneath the tub. I appreciate any comments on this problem, as I have no knowledge of this yet. Thanks.
I am by no means a professional, but have had the same experience with a clog.
Just some suggestions: the drain cleaner has eaten through part of the
pipes or one of the pipe joints (which is not as likely), or the drain cleaner
cleared the clog and it has now travelled further down the pipes and that's why the
water is backing up over your kitchen. As far as whether or not to tackle this
yourself, guess that depends on how experienced you are. Make sure you turn off
the electrical power and the water supply first, have a big bucket on hand and
wear a raincoat! :)
