Banging pipes when sprinklers turn on
Posted by Ken Hansen on July 12, 2001 at 14:40:37:
Whenever the landscape sprinkler solenoid valves turn on I hear a loud single bang noise inside the house. It is loudest at the water heater. Note; the valves don't make any noise when they turn off. There are 3 valve clusters (12 valves total) all different distances from the water main and each one bangs the pipes when they turn on. When each solenoid valve turns on the water presure (at the water main) drops completely to zero for about 20 seconds, then slowly recovers. The water main is 1 1/4" in dia, but the shut off valve & the pressure regulator (located next to the water meter at the street) is only 3/4". I have set the pressure regulator down to 40PSI & up to 70PSI and neither helps the banging. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this extremely annoying problem? Thank you. Ken Hansen
