cement board over vinyl shower pan

I have installed a vinyl shower pan and curb. Next step is to lay the mud bed over the liner. My questions are: 1) Do I carry the mud bed up the walls and over the curb since no nails are supposed to be below the curb height? (the nails I am refering to would be for the cement backer board) 2) If I lay the mud floor without going up the sides and over the curb, how will I secure the cement board at the lower edge of the shower sides and over the curb? Thanks in advance for any advice.
