Water heater cleaning

I just purchased a home with an 82 gallon solar water heater. When I run a faucet with hot water, red (and I mean red) water comes out for around 15 seconds then the color tapers off to clear. The water heater is 15 years old. I have tried draining the unit a couple of times with limited success. I also called a couple of solar specialists who say that the water heater just needs a good draining. Is there a better way to drain the water heater than opening up the drain? Thanks
