Drum trap: Can I replace it with a P-trap

I'm remodeling a 1929 bathroom and have a drum trap that I'd like to get out of my floor. The bathroom is on the first floor and we have a full basement for easy access to the DWV system. I don't have exact measurements on me, but the center of the trap is about 19 inches from the center of the tub and about 32 to 36 inches from the center of the main drain/vent line. Is there any reason(s) that I can't cut out this line and replace it with a P-trap. Thanks in advance and great site!
