you should not have any water coming out of this valve at all. it is a temperature, pressure valve. your water heater may be overheating and may need a new thermostat or your pressure has gone up at the home and you will need to install a pressure regulator. the pressure should be under 80lbs. or... if you are lucky it is just a faulty t&p valve and you will need to replace it regardless.
