If people had to pay me to drain the tank before replacing elements or drain valves, they could not afford me. After turning off the water valve, open one hot water faucet to relieve the pressure, then close it and make sure all the other faucets are closed also, and then remove the valve and install the new one. That vacuum you were asking about will keep most of the water in the tank while you replace the valve.

: My water heater has a cheap little plastic drain valve that now leaks. To replace it I need to drain the water heater. Should I open a faucet when I drain the tank, or does a vacuum break keep the tank from collapsing when draining the entire tank?
