home water pressure question

If I remember the inspector's numbers correctly, our new house (actually 50 yrs old) has water pressure
of about 80. He said it was a bit high, and that we could install a valve to lower the pressure, but didn't
seem overly concerned.

What are the implications of high water pressure, and what is involved in installing this valve?
Is it something the water company does?
