shower drain odor....is this dangerous?

I saw your response to someone else's question about an odor in the bathroom sink. I assume I have the same problem with my shower drain. You wrote: "The over flow in the lav needs a good cleaning.Use bleach to clean. Pout it in to the over flow tube in the lav.There are other products you can purchace from your local hardware also." But where do I find the overflow? What is it? And lastly...I can cover the drain with a rubber stop to keep out the odors for a temporary fix. But I'm wondering: if I don't cover it, isn't the drain releasing bacteria into the room? Isn't that dangerous?
