shower drain this dangerous?

I saw your response to someone else's question about an odor in the bathroom sink. I assume I have the same problem with my shower drain. You wrote:

"The over flow in the lav needs a good cleaning.Use bleach to clean. Pout it in to the over flow tube in the lav. There are other products you can purchace from your local hardware also."
But where do I find the overflow? What is it? And lastly...I can cover the drain with a rubber stop to keep out the odors for a temporary fix. But I'm wondering: if I don't cover it, isn't the drain releasing bacteria into the room? Isn't that dangerous?
