|In response to Re: Installing shower drain to old cast iron tub drain|
: We are remodeling a bathroom and are replacing the old tub with a tile shower. The house is 40 years old and has cast iron drains where the tub drain is located. The house is a slab foundation so it is difficult to move anything. I need to install a 2" drain for the shower pan, but am not sure the best way to connect it to the old cast iron. Right now it has a 1 1/2" galvanized pipe inserted into the cast iron drain, with I think Oakum and Lead for a seal. Should I remove that and install a new pipe, Oakum and Lead. Is there a better way?
: thanks for the help.
Yes, remove that galvanized pipe out of the cast iron. Use a 2" Fernco to make the transition from cast iron to plastic. Slide half of the fernco onto the cast iron and clamp down on it then insert the plastic piping in the other end and clamp it. Good luck Marty
