: In my apartment the pipe hammer when the water is turned off. Also the water makes a lot of noise moving through the pipes to the shower (mostly for the first 5-10 seconds). I believe a hammer arrester could solve the first problem but I'm not sure about the second one. I was also wondering if the hammer arrester had to be put in a certain place in the piping. Chris, you may have a loose washer in your system that is causing this problem. Do you have a PRV in your system? Try an expansion tank by the cold inlet to the water heater. But first check for this loose washer in a valve somewhere. Dale's Plumbing Service LMP
