dishwasher causes sink overflow

Any help with this problem is greatly appreciated: When the dishwasher is used, water begins to spew out of the upper left hole on the kitchen sink. Im not sure what this peice is called, but it's basically a crome cap over some sort of plastic knob. This happens only during certain stages in the wash. Any ideas? Thanks Frank
