In response to Re: how to tell if bath tub is cast iron without destructive testing
: I have a bath tub that is appx. 35 yrs old and the
: finish is worn and scratched. I am considering replacing the tub but am told that if the tub is cast iron, that I should refinish it instead. How do I tell if the tub is cast iron without destroying it. Secondly, an Americast replacement tub is only $225 from Home Depot, so is it really worth refinishing?

Charles, If you knock on the tub like knocking on a door and it sounds hollow it is a steel tub. If it has a thud sound it is cast iron..Given the age it probably is cast iron. Now you have to add the cost of sheet rock work, tile work, and the plumbing work that it takes to change a bath tub. Maybe around $1200.00 or more depending where you live. Good luck on your project.
