overflowing trap seal

Our house (built 1949) has the washer and dryer in the basement. When the washer runs, after a while (especially when doing back-to-back loads) water leaks out of a hole in the "trap seal" that is located behind the washer (trap seal is supposed to keep the floor drain trap wet). I can look in this hole and see that the trap seal seems to be functioning correctly, but it seems that there is something that is causing the line from the trap seal to the floor drain to back up. Does anyone have any advice on this problem? Short of breaking up the floor, what can I do?
