Hot water tank making noise

I have a hot water tank that is about nine years old now and in the past three months or so it has been making a loud rumbling noise almost as though someone was on the inside banging. I have just drained the tank a few weeks ago and nothing came out durt, slug nothing it was clean. The noise stopped for about a week and now is back what is causing this? Is the tank going bad or is there something I can do.
