Natural Gas Hot Water Heater Venting

I am planning to install a natural gas hot water heater (natural vent, not power vent). I have heard that stainless steel venting is recommended, possibly required, due to acidic water in the exhaust air. Can anyone confirm this or let me know what a suitable vent pipe material should be? Also, I live in a colder climate, has anyone ever heard of any freezing problems with the exhaust pipe on these units?

Thanks, Bob
