I just moved into an 18yr old house. The bathtub will not hold water. It is a plunger type tub drain. When I removed the face plate I saw that the entire drain assymbly was missing. I purchased a new assymbly, but when I tried to install it the assymbly would not fit into the drain far enough for me to screw the face plate back on even though I had made it as short as possible. And even with the plunger all the way in as far as it would go water still flows freely down the drain. I cannot see or feel any foreign objects in the drain. Do the plunger assymblies come in different diamaters? Or what else could be my problem?
