If there is a distinct aroma of rotten eggs or other stinky stuff present, chances are that it is Hydrogen Sulphide Gas that is generated by the Al / Mag anode in your water heater. This is a very common problem and can be dealt with by thoroughly flushing the tank out with copious amounts of water whenever it happens.
There are other means of dealing with the problem if in fact it is the problem, by removal of the anode rod or flushing the tank with a chlorine solution (house hold bleach) Removal of the anode will dramatically shorten the life of the heater however. Bud.
