Vinyl, fiberglass, and formica are "temporary" materials that will soon fail and require wall repairs and replacement. Corian, ceramic tile (if installed on a cement base), and the others are long term materials that will normally last until you get tired of looking at them.

: I have bids for replacing my shower from three different contractors. They have each suggested using different materials on the walls, eg. vinyl, fiberglass, tile, formica, swanstone and cultured marble. Of course the prices range from $1,500 to $3,750. I don't know enough about these materials to make an intelligent decision. Obviously, I want the better value for my money and something that will give me good service for a reasonably long period of time. Any advice for me?
