Dave:
Good to hear you have had your boiler tuned up. The burner assembly should be checked out at least once a year, usually in the fall, this will help prevent heat outages in the winter, on days when all the plumbers in the world are too too busy. Hardness is measured in Parts per Million, or grains per gallon, you will have to get it tested to see if requires a softener. The boiler side should give you no problems, as long as you do not change the water in there now. It should be black, indicating a lack of oxygen, not dirty water. Once boiler water reaches this black state it becomes a lot less corrosive as the rust and corrosion causing oxygen/air has been removed. On the water heater side, it is constantly receiving fresh feed water, so the tank should be drained and flushed once a year.....Lou
