Leaky Eljer Shower Faucet

I have an Eljer R shower faucet from the 50's that is leaking at the shower head. Its a compression faucet with separate hot and cold faucets. I can get the stems out, but instead of having a washer at the end of the stem, the end is a hollow cylinder. This hole mates to a piston-like thing that I can't get out of the housing (it remains in the pipe in the wall). Is there anyway to rebuild this thing?
