Scott: First and formost rule of soldering is to get the copper to be soldered clean. That means shiney bright clean by using an abrasive sand cloth or paper or wire brush. Next you need a good flux(there are many on the market). an then...be sure there is no water in the line to be soldered (this will prevent the piping or fitting to become hot enough to draw the solder into the joint to make a good joint)
If you will do these simple steps, you will have good results each and every time. Bud.
