Offset toilet flange with oblong shaped opening

My toilet flange in the second floor bath has an offset flange that is oblong and with an opening larger than the size of a wax ring. I also had to added a new ring with slotted holes for the closet bolts. This has caused the toilet to rock and I can not maintain a seal. Local plumber suggests cutting a hole in the ceiling in the room below the toilet to install a new flange. Do you know of some other options that I should try first? I really do not want to have to replace the ceiling below.
