Al, I took out the bottom of one of our tile showers to replace a leaking pan, and sort of found that the best technique to get the tiles out is whatever works with the least collateral damage to surrounding areas you don't want to take out. You can replace wonderboard sections, I just wouldn't put the joints directly in line with a tile joint/grout line, so you might have to take out one more row of tile than needed to get to stable wonderboard.
