National Radon Awareness Programs

Warm greetings to everyone participating in the National Radon Awareness activities across the nation.

Radon is a silent killer. An odorless, colorless, radioactive gas, it causes nearly 14,000 lung cancer deaths per year - more than any other health hazard except smoking. The Environmental Protection Agency, working in partnership with Radon Specialists, health and educational organizations across the county, and with federal, state, and local government officials, is working to educate the public about the dangers of radon. These efforts have prompted millions of Americans to test their homes, offices, and schools for radon and to lower the levels of this deadly gas.

Although we are greatly encouraged by our progress, we must sustain our public awareness efforts and remind all Americans about the importance of testing for radon. The test is easy, inexpensive, and most important, effective. By taking this simple preventive step, we can reduce radon levels significantly and ensure a healthier future for ourselves and our families.

Best wishes for a successful observance.
