You may only need one opinion. The flue is blocked and not letting the gases leave the fire chamber. You have to clean the flue in the heater and also the chimney through the roof. Then find out why it plugged up in the first place. It is a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

: Hi there,

: We have a gas water heater that started losing both pilot
: and burner about two or three weeks ago. There was a
: lot of soot on the burner, and I took it out and cleaned
: it pretty thoroughly. Used compressed air to clean out
: the individual vents(?) on the burner. When I put it
: back in, the pilot won't stay lit (as before) and the
: whole thing shuts off after about two minutes of
: operation. I have shut off the water heater and the
: gas line for safety and I'm going to call in a repair
: service. For the sake of a second opinion, can you
: point to any possible solutions?

: Thanks!
