hose/pipe fittings and sizes

I recently changed the kitchen faucet and water filter. While doing so, because the filter (an Amway) has nonstandard connections, I discovered there are lots of hose or pipe fittings and sizes. For example, just for 1/2-inch, I was confronted with inside vs. outside diameter, compression fitting, F.I.P. (fits-in-pipe?), M.I.P. (?), and some others I don't remember. Is there a website or some amateur guide about what all these standards are - in particular which is used for water, for gas, for both?
