Magnetic water conditioners

Do these things actually work? They seem greatly overpriced for what they are, but if they work, they
might be worth it. I recall, in the 1940's my father installed a pot-bellied union gadget on a commercial
size water heater coil to stop deposits from clogging. Before using this gadget the coil had to be
replaced at least once a year. After the gadget was installed, no clogging. Inside the union was
a chise edged bar of metal. I don't know how it worked. Neither did the plumber that
installed it. He did guarantee that it would work, though, and it did.
