Sewer Line

From my clean out plug to the city line i have pvc. It is attached to a short piece of cast iron via rubber hose and clamps. The cast iron is attached to some unknown material, that is somewhat curved but not perfectly round. How it is attached I am unsure as the joint is wrapped in electricians tape. It looks as though it is a material that is formable when it is hot. It looks as though they used this material to make a 90 degree turn. I have uncovered several joints along the way, all of which are heavily penetrated by roots. So much so, they have punched a hole in this unknown material. I have not yet found where this material attaches to the house line, but I am no more than 2 feet from the foundation. I suspect that the house line is made of cast iron as well, since the main vent is cast iron going into the foundation. My question: Is there an effective way to attach pvc to cast iron? If so, how? Please help!
