David- You can install radiant heat for a hardwood floor in so many different ways. It can be installed under the subfloor in the joist bays with a heat emission plate and then insulated; or it can be installed on top with a thin concrete layer. The thinnest I would go is 1" thick mud using fiberglass strands entrained in the mud for strength and using 3/8" pex pipe.
